Things We Love

A Woman's Guide to Finding Her Inner French Girl

I was recently struck by something I read in the book Entre Nous: A Woman’s Guide to Finding Her Inner French Girl.  In it, the author, Debra Ollivier, writes that French women only wear clothing that they love. This got me thinking: If I took a hard look at my closet, what percent of its contents would pass this tres chic test? What if I took the plunge and sold everything I didn’t love, whittling my wardrobe down to my most treasured pieces?  What would make the cut?

It didn’t take long for me to round out the top three: my brown riding boots, my little black blazer, and (of course!) my aquamarine-set engagement ring.

But I’m curious to hear from you:  Which clothing pieces would make your cut?

I feel most connected to my jewelry. But with clothes it would be a certain pair of jeans that just fits perfectly. And a felt coat I found that is just the right weight for mild winters. And I love my collection of blue leather shoes.

I recently took this approach to my overstuffed closet and came up with the idea that the hard to find designer pieces and denim were items that I truly love. The pieces I get as layering or just for fun I don’t seem to be as attached to. Also, my jewelry is a big statement for me so I love it all!

Hmmm. Top of my head I’d say my favorite Salt Works skinny jeans (4 years old and still the best!), classic ankle-length double-breasted black coat and perfectly worn gold repetto flats. Oh, and my slippers!!

Right now I am very much into the country girl meets the city girl. At heart I am a country girl but unfortunately I live in the city…Also I cannot live without a great pair of riding, or for me walking, boots! A girl can’t have too many boots, right?!

    XOXO

Just lastnight while packing up to move and getting rid of clothing that falls into the “I never wear” catagory, I realized that I am really attached to my designer denim and designer handbag collections. But I would have to agree with the stylist my new yellow diamond engagment ring would definatly be one of my top three.

I have to agree with EGreer, that I find it very hard to let go of my designer clothes, especially jeans. Theres nothing like putting on my black Milly dress and having my husband tell me I look gorgeous. I can tell you that there are definitely items that I do not love, and sell often. I tend to buy a lot of F21 and Charlotte Russe. After a while, either the clothes don’t fit well anymore, or I just don’t “love” them like I used to. I often make trips to my local Crossroads to sell such things. I will admit that there is a Snak skirt from Anthropologie in the very back of my closet that I can not get rid of. I love it to pieces, even though I am now two sizes larger than when my husband bought it for me!

It’s funny, I always fall hard for loud prints and “unusual” pieces. But it’s my tried-and-true classics, like my Theory cashmere and velvet tees, that would make the cut because I wear them over and over again.

i love that you mention this book, i read the same thing as you and havnt looked back, sure my closet is thin, but it makes so much sense to only have beautiful things! i feel less guilty about shopping now aswell, knowing that every piece i get will be well loved instead of ‘average”. i wish every woman would do this, what a fashionable world we would be in!
